Bols Xmas Tree Fund

Bols Forstplanteskole has been in the Christmas tree industry for more than two decades. We established the fund in 2007 in order to create awareness about and improve the terrible conditions under which the Georgian cone pickers live and work.

We are pleased with the ever-increasing support for Fair Trees® from nurseries and growers. This increased support means that every time someone buys 1 kilo of Fair Trees seeds, the Georgian workers receive 75 Danish kroner through the Bols Xmas Tree Fund.

This support is very much needed for development in Georgia. After having been subjected to Soviet rule with severe economic, social and political consequences, Georgians are struggling to get back on their feet again. The local cone pickers do not have many opportunities and they live in poor conditions. They risk their lives by climbing from tree to tree at a height of 30 metres to collect seeds for wealthy Europeans’ traditional Christmas tree.
The Bols Xmas Tree Fund ensures that the workers are instructed on safety. The Fund has imposed strict conditions requiring the wearing of safety equipment at all times to prevent accidents. In addition to this, the cone pickers are granted health insurance covering the costs in case of occupational injuries or when standard medical attention is needed.

By bringing into focus the Georgian working conditions, the Bols Xmas Tree Fund strives to improve the Georgian cone pickers’ working conditions and the methods that are necessary to obtain the seeds for the Danes’ preferred Christmas tree, the Nordmann fir.

Furthermore, the Fund works toward creating proper conditions for workers and their families through financial support for schools, books, dental care and health care.
